Peter Klashorst – KFC (mixed media on canvas, 60 × 50 cm)

€150.00

Introduction

An original mixed-media painting on canvas by the Dutch artist Peter Klashorst, titled 'KFC'. An energetic, almost abstract composition in red, white and blue, in which bucket-like forms, swirling strokes and sprayed lines evoke the colours and dynamism of fast-food branding. It shows Klashorst at his most gestural, letting colour and movement carry the image.

The Artist and Artistic Context

Peter Klashorst (b. 1957, Santpoort) belongs to the generation of Dutch painters who emerged in the early 1980s around the 'Nieuwe Wilden' - the Dutch counterpart of the international return to expressive, figurative painting after the dominance of conceptual and minimal art. In 1983 he received the Royal Award for Painting (Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst). Throughout his career the female figure and the portrait have stood at the centre of his work, painted with speed, energy and a strong instinct for colour. In the 2000s he increasingly drew on the imagery of advertising, brands and the internet, setting his figures against logos, slogans and screen fragments. In 'KFC' the brand reference is reduced to its colours and rhythm, so that the painting sits between pop imagery and abstract expressionism.

Technique and Composition

The work is executed in mixed media on canvas. Broad, loose strokes of cadmium red and several blues are laid over a cream ground, with dark accents, a silvery-grey patch and sprayed red lines across the surface. The paint is applied quickly and in layers, with drips and spatters left visible as part of the composition.

Signature and Provenance

Signed 'Klashorst' in black lower left on the front. The reverse shows the original wooden stretcher. The painting comes from a group of works acquired from the artist in 2007-2008 by a Dutch private collector; correspondence from that period is in our possession.

Condition

Good condition, consistent with age. The canvas is taut on its original stretcher; no tears or losses were observed. Light handling marks are present on the edges, and the reverse shows studio paint marks, as is usual for works from the artist's studio. Sold unframed. The photographs form part of the description.
