Peter Klashorst – Flickr (mixed media on canvas, 55 × 50 cm)
Introduction
An original mixed-media painting on canvas by the Dutch artist Peter Klashorst, titled 'Flickr'. A reclining female figure, seen from a low, close viewpoint, is set against a screen-like background bearing the 'flickr' logo and fragments of a web interface ('Preview', 'Options'). The work brings together two constants in Klashorst's work - the female figure and the visual language of contemporary media - in a bold, high-keyed palette of sky blue, magenta, orange and deep red.
The Artist and Artistic Context
Peter Klashorst (b. 1957, Santpoort) belongs to the generation of Dutch painters who emerged in the early 1980s around the 'Nieuwe Wilden' - the Dutch counterpart of the international return to expressive, figurative painting after the dominance of conceptual and minimal art. In 1983 he received the Royal Award for Painting (Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst). Throughout his career the female figure and the portrait have stood at the centre of his work, painted with speed, energy and a strong instinct for colour. In the 2000s he increasingly drew on the imagery of advertising, brands and the internet, setting his figures against logos, slogans and screen fragments. 'Flickr' is a clear example of this: the photo-sharing website becomes the frame through which the model is seen, turning a classic studio subject into a comment on looking and sharing images online.
Technique and Composition
The work is executed in mixed media on canvas. The figure is drawn in fast black contour lines over layered passages of pink, violet and orange, with sprayed accents in deep red and violet. The logo and interface elements are painted in blue across the upper part of the canvas, while drips, spray mist and areas of bare primed canvas along the edges keep the surface open and direct.
Signature and Provenance
The work is not signed on the front. The reverse shows the original wooden stretcher, numbered '42'. The painting comes from a group of works acquired from the artist in 2007-2008 by a Dutch private collector; correspondence from that period is in our possession.
Condition
Good condition, consistent with age. The canvas is taut on its original stretcher; no tears or losses were observed. Light handling marks are present on the edges, and the reverse shows studio paint marks, as is usual for works from the artist's studio. Sold unframed. The photographs form part of the description.
