Peter Klashorst – Fast Food (mixed media on canvas, 55 × 50 cm)

€150.00

Introduction

An original mixed-media painting on canvas by the Dutch artist Peter Klashorst, titled 'Fast Food'. A large hamburger and a red carton of fries with the golden arches, accompanied by a hand-written price tag '69,-', fill the canvas in a loose, playful pop-art manner. It is a witty, colourful image of consumer culture, painted with the same speed and freedom Klashorst brings to his figures.

The Artist and Artistic Context

Peter Klashorst (b. 1957, Santpoort) belongs to the generation of Dutch painters who emerged in the early 1980s around the 'Nieuwe Wilden' - the Dutch counterpart of the international return to expressive, figurative painting after the dominance of conceptual and minimal art. In 1983 he received the Royal Award for Painting (Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst). Throughout his career the female figure and the portrait have stood at the centre of his work, painted with speed, energy and a strong instinct for colour. In the 2000s he increasingly drew on the imagery of advertising, brands and the internet, setting his figures against logos, slogans and screen fragments. 'Fast Food' takes this interest to everyday consumer icons: the burger and fries become a still life of the modern age, painted with the irony and energy of street art.

Technique and Composition

The work is executed in mixed media on canvas. The burger and fries are drawn in black line and built up with oil-stick and paint in yellow, orange, red and blue, with sprayed red over the bun. Splashes and drips of yellow and red, scribbled lettering and patches of bare primed canvas give the composition its spontaneous, graffiti-like character.

Signature and Provenance

The work is not signed on the front. The reverse shows the original wooden stretcher, numbered '14'. The painting comes from a group of works acquired from the artist in 2007-2008 by a Dutch private collector; correspondence from that period is in our possession.

Condition

Good condition, consistent with age. The canvas is taut on its original stretcher; no tears or losses were observed. Light handling marks are present on the edges, and the reverse shows studio paint marks, as is usual for works from the artist's studio. Sold unframed. The photographs form part of the description.
