Peter Klashorst – Cherry (mixed media on canvas, 45 × 60 cm)

€150.00

Introduction

An original mixed-media painting on canvas by the Dutch artist Peter Klashorst, titled here 'Cherry'. A close-up face with lowered eyes holds a long-stemmed red cherry at the lips, surrounded by expressive strokes of red, pale blue, grey and cream. Sensual and painterly, the work shows Klashorst's ability to turn a simple gesture into a striking image.

The Artist and Artistic Context

Peter Klashorst (b. 1957, Santpoort) belongs to the generation of Dutch painters who emerged in the early 1980s around the 'Nieuwe Wilden' - the Dutch counterpart of the international return to expressive, figurative painting after the dominance of conceptual and minimal art. In 1983 he received the Royal Award for Painting (Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst). Throughout his career the female figure and the portrait have stood at the centre of his work, painted with speed, energy and a strong instinct for colour. In the 2000s he increasingly drew on the imagery of advertising, brands and the internet, setting his figures against logos, slogans and screen fragments. The close-up face, cropped tightly by the edges of the canvas, is typical of his portraits from this period, in which a single gesture or detail carries the whole picture.

Technique and Composition

The work is executed in mixed media on canvas. The face is modelled in thick, layered strokes of cream, ochre, red and pale blue, with dark green-black accents around the eyes and in the background. The cherry is painted in deep red with blue highlights, and black spray paint softens the upper edge. Brushwork, scraping and visible canvas texture give the surface a rich, tactile quality.

Signature and Provenance

Signed 'Klashorst' vertically in black on the right-hand side of the front. The reverse shows the original wooden stretcher, numbered '1'. The painting comes from a group of works acquired from the artist in 2007-2008 by a Dutch private collector; correspondence from that period is in our possession.

Condition

Good condition, consistent with age. The canvas is taut on its original stretcher; no tears or losses were observed. Light handling marks are present on the edges, and the reverse shows studio paint marks, as is usual for works from the artist's studio. Sold unframed. The photographs form part of the description.
