Peter Klashorst – Canon (mixed media on canvas, 60 × 45 cm)

€150.00

Introduction

An original mixed-media painting on canvas by the Dutch artist Peter Klashorst, titled 'Canon'. Two birds - an albatross and a second sea bird - are drawn in loose black line over patches of blue, orange and grey, framed by the hand-written slogan 'Wildlife as Canon sees it' and a large 'canon' logo at the bottom. With its light, airy palette and humorous reference to camera advertising, it is a fresh and witty work.

The Artist and Artistic Context

Peter Klashorst (b. 1957, Santpoort) belongs to the generation of Dutch painters who emerged in the early 1980s around the 'Nieuwe Wilden' - the Dutch counterpart of the international return to expressive, figurative painting after the dominance of conceptual and minimal art. In 1983 he received the Royal Award for Painting (Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst). Throughout his career the female figure and the portrait have stood at the centre of his work, painted with speed, energy and a strong instinct for colour. In the 2000s he increasingly drew on the imagery of advertising, brands and the internet, setting his figures against logos, slogans and screen fragments. 'Canon' borrows the language of a camera advertisement to frame a nature subject, a playful comment on how we look at the world through brands and lenses.

Technique and Composition

The work is executed in mixed media on canvas. The birds are drawn in fluid black line over washes and strokes of sky blue, orange, grey and white, with heavier black brushwork at the edges. Hand-written words ('Ecuador', 'Albatross') and the advertising slogan are integrated into the composition, and the 'canon' logo is outlined in black and filled with yellow and orange.

Signature and Provenance

Signed 'Klashorst' vertically in black on the right-hand side of the front. The reverse shows the original wooden stretcher, numbered '22'. The painting comes from a group of works acquired from the artist in 2007-2008 by a Dutch private collector; correspondence from that period is in our possession.

Condition

Good condition, consistent with age. The canvas is taut on its original stretcher; no tears or losses were observed. Light handling marks are present on the edges, and the reverse shows studio paint marks, as is usual for works from the artist's studio. Sold unframed. The photographs form part of the description.
